Our B’nei Mitzvah program is designed to be meaningful for both the student and their family.

It is not merely a performance followed by a party, at Or Hadash, becoming B’nei Mitzvah marks a major milestone in one’s Jewish education as a child and the beginning of one’s learning on a more adult level. B’nei Mitzvah is also an opportunity to affirm a child’s and a family’s sense of belonging to the Jewish community in general and to the Or Hadash community in particular.

Every B’nei Mitzvah at Or Hadash is special. Each family adds personal touches—readings, poems, or songs—that make their simcha unique and different. As each child takes their first steps into Jewish adulthood, s/he/they are surrounded by family members, friends, and communty members who take special roles in the service that parallel the important roles they play in the student’s life. At their B’nei Mitzvah service, each student speaks about their/ his/ her unique mitzvah project, a special and important part of the preparation which blends the student’s unique talents and personality with their burgeoning vision for a more just world. Add these special ingredients of community service, responsibility, kindness, and good deeds to get a true taste of what it’s like to make a difference and connect to your own sense of Jewish identity.

We are proud of our committment to working with each family to craft the simcha that best fits and honors their child. This includes honoring and accomodating neurodiversity and disability with B’nei Mitzvah tutoring services that enable each child to participate in this important life cycle event in a way that makes them feel seen, honored, and proud to stand before their community as a new Jewish adult.
